Locks of Rooed Soay Fleece
Rooed Soay Fleece: The photo below is a close up of rooed locks of crimpy, dark brown fleece from one of our British Soay ewes. The lock at left has not been altered or prepared in any way. Notice the even line at the bottom of the lock; this is the natural "break" in the fiber, where it broke cleanly from the fiber which remained on the ewe. Rooed locks have this advantage over shorn locks; you know that the "break" is not somewhere in the middle of your fiber! The lock at right has merely been combed, and is ready to spin into lovely yarn.
